Even for those of us who grow up in cities, more of our childhood is linked to plants than we might think.
The paper in our school books and our comics is made from trees, as are wooden pencils and crayons.
Grass is essential to any number of childhood games and sports, and springtime just wouldn’t be the same without dandelion clocks to blow and daisy chains to make. But grass can also make you miserable if you’re unlucky enough to suffer from hayfever or asthma.
Chocolate, cake, biscuits and sweets may not be a particularly healthy choice, but they are a firm favourite with most children. Without cocoa, vanilla and sugar, they wouldn’t be nearly as delicious as they are.
Say “vegetables” to the majority of children and they’ll turn up their noses. Say “chips” or “mashed potato” and it’s a different story! Add to that the fact that their favourite condiment, tomato sauce, is made from a fruit, and the connection with plants is growing stronger by the second!
See the top 10 plants that we think have made the biggest difference to this category.
